James was one of Gol D. Roger's inner-nakama and a poison expert. He was given a large wooden box containing a still to make whiskey as a parting gift from his captain. After his death his still was taken from his widow. Poor James doesn't even get a scene in any of the stories, but he and his wife, Red Molly are the first One Piece original characters I developed! Their names and a few others in this story come from a Richard Thompson song called “1952 Vincent Black Lightning”.
James represents the "Sakimi tama"part of the Shikon which in the Shinto religion is a spirit that imparts blessings.
